TV systems
worldwide

|
Different
countries use different TV systems. The difference between these systems
lies partly in the way in which the colour signal information is modulated
with the luminance information in the radio frequency signal used for
transmission. Because of historical factors, the line frequency in each
country's mains power supply determines the picture frame and field rate
of that country's television system.
Video copies produced on one system will not usually be playback
compatible with equipment designed for another system - even though the
tape format - such as VHS is the same.
The same is also true for most CD and DVD releases. Whilst CD or DVD
productions produced on one system often can be played on a computer in a
country that uses another system, the same CD or DVD discs will usually be
incompatible with dedicated DVD "set-top" players in that
country - because the player and TV are designed for a different system.
When ordering copies - on VHS, CD or DVD - it is therefore important to
ensure that the copies will be compatible with the TV system in the
country in which they will be used.
