Educational films

The production of educational films is an important activity at Channel 6 Television.
The market for educational films has been growing in recent years. Today film and video are used widely throughout the Danish education system, from primary and secondary schools to higher- and adult educational institutions.
The television medium is an important educational tool - a useful supplement to other traditional teaching aids.

Whilst printed teaching material is well suited to the presentation of facts and figures, the visual medium of television is far superior for the presentation of experience, personal stories, atmosphere and other means of expression, which create an overview and contribute to an understanding of context and form.

Many film projects, which once would have been realised by public-service television are particularly relevant in a teaching situation; though with the gradual

commercialisation of broadcast television in recent years, fewer productions suitable for educational use are available to teachers via national television.

The production of educational films is a challenging and professionally satisfying endeavour for any producer or production company.

Given the right subject and story, one may produce a film for educational use, free from the limitations usually imposed by a commercial programme schedule.

Educational programming has therefore
inherited many of the broadcast television's public-service obligations - particularly with regard to natural and social science.
Educational programming must meet other equally stringent demands. The programme subject matter must be relevant - not just in general terms, but also in relation to specific age groups and curricula.

The programme content and form must also meet exacting standards. Pupils and students - especially the younger classes - are a thankful, yet demanding audience.
Good educational programming draws on the well-established language of broadcast television and the cinema - the visual alphabet with which audience can follow the story and understand the plot. The conventions of the visual medium are intuitive, something we all learn in childhood - and like a good book - a good film should be written "from left to right".
Most educational film projects are funded by grants or commissions from public funds or private foundations.

An understanding of the requirements of a given age-group or curriculum, together with an insight into the particular focus subjects for a given year, are the essential foundation for a successful educational film project.

The idea for an educational film may be our own - or the idea may come to us through our contact with teachers and other education professionals.

The content of many educational films may be based on general knowledge, and can be realised in-house by a traditional journalistic approach, with little requirement for professional support. Other educational films may have a subject matter, treatment or educational application that implies that the producer has access to professional expertise in relation to the subject and the educational form.
Professional consultants with relevant expertise or educational experience are often attached to a film project. Depending on the nature of the project, the consultant may be involved in the development process, or may be engaged for the entire project.

Sometimes an idea or project proposal may be submitted from someone who subsequently will be engaged as consultant for the project.
For most educational film projects we also produce printed matter such as teachers' guides and extra information about the subject.

This is often accomplished in combination with a project website, from where both teachers and students may download additional information.

See for example the website for our project from 2003 "EU - Who decides?" (in Danish)
Channel 6 Televisions comprehensive film and videotape archive from over 20 years of production is an important asset in the making of many educational films. The archive makes it possible to realise many projects for which there are limited resources for the filming of new material.
Channel 6 Television seeks to cooperate with others in the production of educational films in any language or for use in any country. If you have an idea - or have identified a need - for a film, we would like to hear from you.
