Co-production
|
|
| A
co-production is a joint venture between two production companies or
production units. There are many ways to co-produce. |
|
| The
idea for a project may be the result of a co-operation - in which case it
may be the natural choice to produce the project together. |
|

The co-production
contract -
for the benefit of both parties. |
It
may also be that the one of company or individual comes to the other
with an idea for a project, for which there is a need for expertise,
production resources or support from the other party.
Sometimes one party will have the idea, or will have identified the
opportunity to produce a film, whilst the other party has the
experience and contacts that may be necessary to develop the project
and secure funding.
For some productions there may be a logical cooperation on the
actual production process - one party handling the shoot, the other
handling the post-production or duplication and distribution.
In short - there are as many ways of organising a co-production as
there are partners willing to work together!
Co-production requires clear agreements between the co-production
partners. The division of investment, responsibility, costs and
subsequent income and rights should be clearly defined so that the
partners may enter into a co-production contract before commencing
production. |
|
|
| Over
the past 20 years, Channel 6 Television has participated in several
co-production projects and the company has good experience of this
approach to production - regardless of whether we are playing first or
second violin - or a duet! |
|
The
most successful co-production projects are those in which the partners
have a natural desire to co-operate and a logical and natural approach to
sharing both the work and the reward.
When a single production budget must give an attractive income to two or
more production companies, it is essential the input of each partner is
complementary to, rather than competitive with, the other. The result
should be the fruit of combined expertise and resources. |

| Although
Channel 6 Television is a full-service production house with own
facilities and production staff, the company seeks to co-operate with
others - as a way of widening our activities and expertise, as a way to
optimise the utilisation of our facilities, and - not least - as a way of
ensuring a continual flow of new ideas and creative individuals to our
production environment. |
|
| Sometime
we co-operate in the initial development of the project - on other
occasions we participate with our staff and facilities - and sometimes we
enter into a joint venture that embraces the entire production. The
approach and level of co-operation is always dictated by the needs of
project and the partners. |
|
| If
we have learnt on thing during 20 years of production, it is the
importance of honesty and integrity in the way which we handle other
people's ideas and project proposals. If you pitch an idea to us, we will
give you an open evaluation and an honest response; and we will only move
forward with your idea if and when we have reached an agreement with you.
If nothing comes of our discussions, the idea is still yours to take
wherever you want. This is something we promise all potential
co-production partners - exactly as we expect in return. |
|
| If
you have an idea for a production for which you seek a co-production
partner to share in development or provide production resources and
expertise, we would be pleased to meet with you and discuss your ideas -
in the hope that we may both decide to work together. |
