"Kosmos"
(1949 - 2000)
Documentary - 29:30 Danish
Produced for Danmarks Radio TV
Several reels of film lie hidden in a shoe-box for 50 years. The film
reels hold a story from 1949, when the Danish film photographer Eskild
"Fut" Jensen joined a Norwegian whaling expedition to the
Antarctic. The ship-owner who paid for the film, subsequently decided that
it was in his best economic interest that Fut Jensen's film should never
see the light of day.
Now that both the ship-owner and the photographer are no longer with us,
this story of a bloody and cynical exploitation of the great whales during
the post war years may finally be told.
51 years in the making! Fut Jensen's original footage is probably the best
documentation ever to come out of the whaling grounds of the Antarctic.
Also included in this film are interviews, made in 2000 with Norwegian
whalers who - as young men - were present on the 1949 voyage. |
